Below is an extract from a university assessment which required me to select a social/cultural group who may require specific needs for their learning. I selected Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) students and investigated the courses of their experienced disadvantage and what strategies can be implemented to assist in their learning. By looking at Australia's past and the horrific treatment of the Indigenous population, it can be better understood why there has been a great disconnection between ATSI students and the Australian Education System. To combat this, in the paper I recommend teacher self-awareness on how they view their ATSI students, and a flexible curriculum which accommodates for Indigenous ways of learning. This artefact clearly demonstrates my ability to understand how culture, identity and linguistic background impacts the education of ATSI students, and the respect required for understanding and implementing such rich histories into the classroom experience.
