Unit of learning to promote reconciliation and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.

Demonstrate broad knowledge of, understanding of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages.

This page provides evidence for meeting Standard 2 (specifically sub-standard 2.4) at a graduate level.

This artefact is an Assessment Task that was completed during Teaching Humanities and Social Sciences in the Primary Years and involved producing a unit of learning for an Inquiry Project (IP) structured using the 5Es instructional model over 10 lessons through five phases: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate (Bybee, 1997) where students develop a framework around posing inquiry questions about the past to promote reconciliation and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.

I selected this particular artefact as this unit of learning develops students’ knowledge of, understanding of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages.

I learnt from this assessment task how to design an IP to enable students to learn how to investigate how aspects of the past are present in their daily lives. This artefact exemplifies the 2.4 AITSL standard as by the end of the IP, students will be able to provide reasons for the significance and cultural value of particular sites and have an understanding of the significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

To improve this area to move towards the next career stage I will complement and grow my theoretical understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages through incorporating incursions and excursions into my future teaching program (Hyde et al., 2017).
