BRiTE Certificate
BRiTE Module Course
For my first artefact I have chosen the Building Resilience in Teacher Education (BRiTE) Modules. While this course represents the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers 4.5, 6.2, 6.4, 7.3, 7.4; I believe the most relevant standard it aligns with is Standard 3: Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning, focus area 3.3: Use teaching strategies (AITSL, 2014).
This course gave me strategies for building relationships with colleagues, students and parents. To become a successful teacher, I will be required to create strong relationships with my students. After completing this course, I learnt that a student's experience at school can be affected by the relationship they will have with me (Mansfield et al, 2018). One teaching strategy that stood out for me was the S-I-B framework from Kids Matter. Setting the scene for cooperation, identifying interests and brainstorming options can help me create that strong relationship with my students within my classroom.
Australian Student Wellbeing Framework Course
While the BRiTE modules taught me about how important my wellbeing is, the Australian Student Wellbeing Framework modules built my knowledge on the importance of student wellbeing. This course directly represents Standard 4: Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments, Focus area 4.4: Maintain student safety (AITSL, 2014). This course will also help support my role on the School Council at my daughters school where I have helped create our recent Anti-bullying Plan as well as the Student Wellbeing and Discipline policy.
I take student wellbeing extremely seriously and as a future teacher, I could not possibly expect my students to be engaged in learning when their wellbeing is compromised. The Australian Student Wellbeing Framework lists five elements to help promote student wellbeing. These elements are leadership, inclusion, student voice, partnerships and support (Education Councin, 2018, p. 4). If I can utilise these five elements within my classroom, I can help support all of my student's wellbeing by creating a safe and secure learning environment.
The course also serves the following AITSL Standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 3.1, 3.3, 4.1, 4.3, 6.1, 6.2, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3.
Relief Teaching for Graduates Course
After graduating, I hope to gain full-time employment. However, I do understand that this might not be the case and I may need to look at other avenues of employment including being a relief teacher. While the following AITSL Standards can be seen within this course, 1.2, 2.5, 3.1, 3.3, 3.5, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 6.2, 7.4; Standard 2: Know the content and how to teach it, Focus area 2.1: Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area (AISTL, 2014) stands out as the most relevant.
What I gained from this course is the importance of being able to deliver the lesson plan that has been left by the regular teacher. This creates continued student learning. To be able to follow the lesson plans and continue the education of the students in the class, it is imperative to build my teaching strategies and overall content knowledge. Constructing my own 'Bag of Tricks' will give me the ability to adapt to any situation that may arise.
