My teaching philosophy

I believe that all children have the right to quality education and every child, no matter their circumstances, needs a strong teacher to nurture, guide and support their learning experiences. I thrive on curiosity and asking questions and know children are the same. My pedagogy is one of inquiry-based learning where students ask questions, gather evidence and come to a conclusion through working collaboratively or individually (Duchesne & McMaugh, 2018, p.257). To create a classroom environment where the students are engaged, I believe the students should have a voice in their own education and be directly involved in the decision making process (McGregor & Mills, in Gobby & Walker, 2017, pp. 380-381). One of my top priorities is building strong, supportive and caring relationships with the students I teach and creating a positive classroom environment where learning is engaging and productive (Duchesne & McMaugh, 2018, p.621).

Through these beliefs, I feel I have a very humanistic approach to learning. I agree with Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory, as children who do not have their basic needs met, cannot possibly learn effectively within the classroom (Churchill et al, 2019, pp. 88). Rodgers belief of learning through personal change and growth (Churchill et al, 2019, pp. 89) also resonates with me and I feel his approach to 'learner-centred education' is the way of the future.

I have a passion for teaching and have wanted to be a teacher since I was in Primary School, but life sent me in a different direction after graduating High School in 2004. It was not until my daughter started Kindergarten in 2018 that my passion was re-ignited. Volunteering at her school really showed me how much I love to help children grow. Watching my daughter struggle at school with a learning difficulty has been one of the hardest things to watch but has also made my desire to help all children stronger. By creating a safe environment for my students, I hope to gain their trust and understanding that I care for each one of them and have their best interests at heart. I want to be the teacher that all students want. I want to make learning fun and engaging. Most of all, I want every student to feel safe and confident in their learning abilities and know I will be there to help guide them through their journey in becoming life-long learners.
