Literacy Comprehension and Display

Before starting my practicum placement, students had begun to read the book A Bridge to Terabithia, and during the first week of my placement, they completed the book. To continue their learning, I planned two consecutive lessons to check their understanding of the story elements and develop their comprehension skills.

The first lesson was for each student to individually identify aspects of the story they thought positive, neutral and negative whilst explaining their reasons why. This provided the opportunity as a class discussion to explore that each person has a different opinion and perspective even though they read the same book.

The second lesson continued from the first whereby students were organised into pairs and they would create their own board game utilising a template provided and incorporate aspects from the story they identified as positive, negative and neutral.

The task required students to work together but incorporated multiple Key Learning Areas including Literacy, Literature, Language, Mathematics and The Arts. Upon completion, the students had to play the games created by other groups to check the game format as well as check for comprehension of A Bridge to Terabithia.
