Standard 1.1 Physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students: Report for Child Development

This is an excerpt of a report I completed in SP1 March 2019, in the unit Child Development for Educators. This artefact demonstrates my understanding of the physical development of children, and the impact this has on other areas of child development including cognitive and social and emotional areas of development. This report also links to teacher standards 3.3 - Use teaching strategies. Whilst the report is my first introduction into the bachelor degree, it provides a good understanding of child development and. I intend to implement some of these techniques into the classroom.

Activities to support physical development

To encourage the development of motor skills, educators can coordinate activities to reflect the development of the whole child. A fine motor activity could be writing letters on clothes pegs. A child will need to pinch the peg and match the peg with the corresponding letter on a word cut out encouraging both fine motor skills and literacy development.

Gross motor skills may be encouraged with activities such as throwing and catching to develop hand-eye coordination, hopscotch for developing balancing and Simon Says to increase spatial and body awareness (“Gross Motor Skills”, 2018, para 7).

Conclusion

The role of an educator is to assess all areas of learning and provide the tools necessary to help the child develop to the best of their ability. It is clear that motor skills are an important and necessary skill for children to develop enabling the child to have a successful education and allowing them to be successful as an adult in the workplace and community.
