Standard 2.2 - 'Let's grow mould!' reflection

The lesson plan is the first in a series of four introducing the biological sciences topic of mould. The experiment was planned to be conducted for the first lesson to engage students in the topic and consider how mould grows and what variables within the environment would impact mould growth.

The content of the lesson consists of understanding how mould grows and provides enough materials to students to effectively and sufficiently grow mould themselves as per the learning objectives. Students are shown examples of mould and class discussions are encouraged to identify locations where they have witnessed mould growing. Students are able to gain enough understanding of mould to create a hypothesis and conduct the experiment.

Understanding the content of the lesson is demonstrated well; however, including a successful "hook" for students to begin the lesson engaged is an area for improvement. Conducting experiments within a lesson will engage students, but it may be challenging to bring them back to focus if they are not initially engaged in the lesson.
