PYP Philosophy

The role of the teacher in the classroom is continually evolving, as is the role of the students. Every one of us is different, and the way we learn/teach should be no exception. Whilst everyone has their own set of beliefs and values, our journey along the way and interactions with our community shape and sometimes influence us to reflect on ourselves and determine if we are still the same as before or if we have learnt new skills.

The IB framework promotes student agency helping to develop critical skills needed for the future, some of which are outlined within the General Capabilities section of the Australian Curriculum. These include social skills and critical thinking skills. A goal within The Alice Springs Declaration outlines the need for students to be confident, creative, lifelong learners and active and informed community members. The IB framework is structured in a way that allows the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Australian Curriculum and the Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Declaration to successfully work together to ultimately create an engaging environment for students to become the best version of themselves.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) supports and encourages students to inquire and ask questions about the world around them. Through the IB learner profiles, students begin to identify and recognise skills when collaborating with peers or conducting research independently. The beliefs of the IB promote lifelong learners who consider the world around them and the impact they have on it. Encouraging students to be internationally-minded citizens is a priority I will have in my classroom, providing the tools and support students will need to help them develop these skills.
