Include a range of teaching strategies.
Round Robin literacy and numeracy rotations
The use of small group rotations in a lower primary classroom to develop foundational literacy and numeracy skills allows for the teacher to choose levelled or mixed groupings of students to target particular learning intentions. Tactile and multimodal experiences involving resources such as play dough, puzzles, magnetic letters or counters engage younger learners and assist them in the development of fine motor skills including pencil grip, cutting and threading.

Strategies to support engagement and participation
A strategy that I use often in my role as an SSO working 1:1 or with small groups is the use of targetted games to practice skills and consolidate understanding of specific concepts, particularly in numeracy and literacy. Games are also an effective way to practice social skills such as turn-taking, sharing and resilience.

Integrated learning opportunities
The following artefact, collected from my current school site, illustrates the value of a school kitchen program across all year levels. Kitchen lessons incorporate learning from many different areas, including Maths, with measurement, time, volume and capacity, and English, with recipes and procedural texts and recounts. Social skills are developed as students work in small groups to prepare food, serve and eat as a group, and students are highly engaged and keen to participate.

Year 6 Narrative unit plan
The following artefact is a Year 6 Narrative unit plan developed for MTP507 in August 2021, which incorporates the knowledge processes of the Learning by Design framework. Several teaching strategies were used throughout the unit including read-alouds, modelled reading, sharing of videos, online interviews, and digital technologies and used different groups including small groups, independent work, paireds and whole class discussion.
