What is Required?

From July 2019 any person applying for teacher registration in South Australia must hold a Working with Children Check (WWCC) (Teacher’s Registration Board of South Australia [TRB], 2018). The WWCC is a requirement of the Child Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016, which was introduced by the South Australian government as a result of the 2016 Nyland Royal Commission into child protection (TRB, 2018).

The WWCC replaces other clearances, however anyone holding a valid DCSI child-related employment screening on July 1^st 2019 is considered as having a valid WWCC until their screening expires (Department of Human Services, SA [DHS], 2019).

The WWCC assesses a person suitability to work with children based on child protection information, disciplinary action, spent convictions and includes a check of applicants’ national criminal history (TRB, 2018). WWCC are monitored and updated based on current information, meaning if a charge is laid against a WWCC holder, their check can be cancelled (TRB, 2018).

Additionally, to work as a teacher in South Australia, a person must be registered by the TRB (TRB, 2018). To be registered a teacher must have, along with holding a WWCC, the relevant qualifications and experience and have undertaken appropriate Mandatory Notification Training. A First Aid certificate is not a requirement of the TRB, however most workplaces will require its completion before work commences (TRB, 2018).
