I have chosen focus area 1.1 (Physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students) of the AITSL standards as the development of children is one of the most important things that an educator needs to keep in mind when it comes to their students. Child development was the first thing I learned about when I began university and it has remained with me ever since.
I wrote a 2000 word essay on this topic which allowed me to research peer-based evidence on the topic to further educate myself. I learn that one of the biggest ways a teacher can encourage development is by letting students explore and work things out for themselves and allowing the learning that comes from physical and mental activity. I found that it was important for teachers to make sure what they are teaching is close enough to the students' current level of understanding so that they can make links between the old information and the new information (Duchesne & McMaugh, 2019 p.118).
