Assessment outline for a Year 5 unit of literacy study using Humanities and Social Science themes
This assessment outline was designed to ensure consistent and comparable judgments of individual progression across a Year 5 cohort, who learn in four different classrooms. The success of the planned moderation is dependent on the participation and collaboration of the four classroom teachers. The assessment outline includes descriptions of moderation processes that were integrated into the initial assessment planning stages as well as strategies to be implemented at the diagnostic, formative and summative assessment stages, to ensure that judgments are consistent and comparable.
Moderation strategies integrated within the unit design include teachers collectively developing the success criteria and ensuring alignment with Year 5 Australian curriculum achievement standards. The teacher group agreed to attend fortnightly moderation check-ins, including the final reflection at the end of the unit.
Moderation processes that will be implemented during the unit include the use of a rubric to gather existing knowledge for diagnostic assessment. During formative assessment, checks for understanding are taken at the same time across the year level and discussed by the teaching group. The summative stage information reports will be read aloud by teachers in a moderation session to identify and discuss gaps and trends. Refer to Moderation column for details.
