Artefact

Reflection

This artefact is a PDF of combined workbook and notes taken from a PD seminar that I attended on 'Developing an Effective Writing Programme' by Sheena Cameron and Louise Dempsey in Wagga Wagga.

This resource shows notes that demonstrate my awareness of a range of teaching strategies such as group structures, “I do, we do, you do”, teacher positioning, feedback, and explicit instruction. In this seminar I learned about ways to teach writing including criteria and goal setting, generating ideas through means of critical and creative thinking, using ICT such as GoPro videos to engage students (particularly boys) or incorporating shared experiences like ‘do something, view something, listen to something’ activities.

The notes show my understanding regarding the importance of reviewing, editing, publishing and celebrating writing as a valuable part of the writing process. I have recorded useful phrases that the writing seminar suggested that are effective, inspirational, and time-saving when teaching writing. For example, rather than individually checking students’ writing for full stops, I can pause the exercise to say “Blake has used capital letters and full stops in his sentences, can everyone check that they have done the same?”. This saves time and enables independent editing.

The artefact also highlights a range of useful resources to engage students in their learning such as visual stimulus, hamburger worksheets, T-charts, or drama, and includes ICT such as online platforms like Popplet or Padlet, affordable hardware such as the “Ziggy” portable projector to project and edit students work, “Medal and a Mission” feedback stamps, or online videos like “The Pygmy Seahorse” which can be used for a variety of writing exercises such as descriptive words, reports, persuasive writing, life cycle to name a few.
