Rationale

To demonstrate that I am working towards the graduate standard 1.4 (strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Islander students), I have presented a critical reflective journal that I completed when undertaking the Indigenous Australian Education unit. This journal is an appropriate artefact as it shows my developing understanding and personal awareness of Indigenous culture, cultural identity, linguistic backgrounds and the impact that this has on a child’s learning.

This artefact highlights my understanding of Australia’s colonial history, the richness of Indigenous culture, the Aboriginal Terms of Reference and ways of learning, and outlines the implications of this knowledge for future teaching practice. This paper delineates my appreciation for the difference that it makes to Indigenous students when they are able to see themselves, their values, histories, and communities actually reflected in their learning environments.
