Standard One - Reflection
One of the most important aspects of effective teaching is understanding how students learn (Whitton et al., 2016). This lesson plan demonstrates the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) standards 1.2. This lesson plan was done during EDP210 Primary Professional Experience 1: Planning for Teaching. Within this lesson to demonstrate this standard I used several explicit teaching strategies such as group work, paired work as well as individual work. I placed the students in pairs of different learning skills to also see how they work with a student who learns different to them, the layout of the classroom was imperative to the effectiveness of the lesson. The use of diagnostic and formative assessments was evident within this lesson, to begin the lesson I started with questioning on their prior knowledge to ensure they were competent before moving on. The lesson ended with a formative as these are crucial in understanding and recording the progress of student learning, this also helps to see if the students effectively understood the lesson with the strategies used.
To improve in this area more thorough discussions with the students to get to know them would enhance my knowledge with how each students learn to effectively deliver a lesson that is effective for every student. I would also incorporate a wider range of teaching strategies and different ones for each lesson to encourage engagement as well as to learn which strategies work better and for which students.
