Clearances
To work as a teacher in New South Wales, I am required to hold a valid Working With Children Check and must have completed anaphylaxis training.
The Working With Children Check is a required clearance for teachers to hold for the safety, welfare, and wellbeing of the students they interact with. The clearance is essentially a criminal history record check and is a requirement for any adults engaged in child-related work, either paid or unpaid. This is important because children are considered vulnerable peoples and ensuring their safety is a critical part of the Department of Education’s duty of care.
In addition to the Working With Children Check, teachers in New South Wales are required to undertake anaphylaxis training. This is critical in ensuring their confidence and competence in responding to anaphylactic emergencies to uphold their duty of care through the safety of their students in the learning environment. The training is an online module that elucidates teachers of the medical information and their legal obligations to support students at risk of anaphylaxis.
Further to these mandatory clearances, I have completed a first aid course specific to education and care settings. This is necessary so that I am qualified to apply first aid as necessary which aligns with my duty of care obligations.
