Writing Club 2021
Whilst completing my first Literacy unit at Curtin University in 2021, I was invited to take part in a volunteer program collaborating with other like minded students to run a writing club at Victoria Park Primary School.
Myself and two additional Curtin students agreed to take part in the experience and collaborated over terms two and three to provide an effective, engaging and inviting extra curricular club for a series of students between year groups 4, 5 and 6.
Chen, Nabilla and I spent time each week discussing teaching methods, content and experiences that would engage and enlighten each student while delivering our desired content in order to enlarge their literacy development, with particular focus on their descriptive language and writing abilities.
Attached, you will see the gradual development of our lesson plans / write ups of our expectations for each class session with the children. We were given 45 minutes every week before class on a tuesday morning to teach the children a range of new skills while exploring the fun to be had with literacy learning. After each session - we sought feedback from our mentor, the Vice Principal - Deb. She shared her wisdom of classroom teaching, various strategies for effective engagement and offered insight into the differing levels of students present in our classroom each week.
With this information, we further discussed and jointly reflected upon the lesson and planning involved and altered our course of action for the following week, in doing so we began to understand the extreme importance placed on critical and personal reflection of lesson planning and implementation.
Considering this was our first classroom experience as volunteers, we gained an insightful level of information and knowledge to take with us in our years to come as we progress through our degree's and are placed on practical experiences in future classrooms.
