Engaging parents and carers in the educative process is crucial as learning needs to be encouraged even outside of school. It is important to show the student that the relationship between their parents and their teachers is a positive one. If the relationship between the parent/carer and the educator is positive it may be easier for both parties to get to the bottom of any issues a student may have.

The Australian parents’ council provides further opportunities for development by offering a certificate IV in parent, family, and community training. This training can take between 12-18 months. Other opportunities that I may have within the classroom to engage parents and carers are being in the classroom before and after school so that I am available for discussions with parents and carers and encouraging attendance at parent/teacher nights. As some parents may work or not be able to come into the school at these times, having a collection of email addresses or phone numbers to keep in regular contact with is important too. This way, I am able to inform parents of their child’s high achievements, good behaviours, and positive classroom involvement, as well as upcoming events being held at the school. As a teacher, I will have the ability to set homework activities that involves the parents/caregivers and encourages them to be more involved in the educative process.
