Part A – Standard 1 – Know students and how they learn

1.1 - I began this lesson with a visually appealing and age appropriate story, students should be able to recognise the main character and therefor personally relate to the story, making a meaningful association (Killen, 2012, p. 62). Through interesting discourse, this story should excite and engage students, preparing them for learning about living things (Whitton, et al., 2015, p. 156).

1.2 - I have incorporated a number of different tools for the students to observe, including media such as, books, power point presentations, workbooks and short You Tube clips. I have also written key words on large pieces of paper to assist those students who need help writing. Multiple observations provide the scaffolding that students need to be comfortable whilst completing the task assigned (Whitton et al., 2015, p. 154). I have also decided that because the student’s are in grade one they will need a lot of explicit teaching, to incorporate this I have modelled how to complete the worksheet and displayed this on the board, referring to the word wall to show the children how this can be used (Whitton et al, 2015, p. 241).

1.5 - Students with higher needs have also been catered for through differentiation, a Teacher Aide (TA) is available to assist during the writing time, taking a small group aside, showing students where they can access the information needed (Land, 2004).
