My Teaching Philosophy

As an educator, it is our responsibility to ensure that the approach we take for educating children is fair, equal, and without prejudice. Creating an inclusive environment and treating children with respect regardless of their cultural background, age, sex or ability is vital when creating a safe and inclusive classroom (Foreman & Arthur-Kelly, 2014, p. 125). As an educator, I will have high expectations for myself and my students. I will endeavour to make an academic impact so that my students can achieve the learning outcomes set in the class. Through the use of assessments, both summative and formative I will be able to monitor progress and implement programs needed for the students that require additional assistance (Walker & Gobby, 2017, p.333). I will be a reflective practitioner that is able to seek feedback to improve my teaching practices creating the best learning environment for my students (Churchill, 2018, p. 83). I will use the resilience that I have learned through the BRITE program and during my placement units along with resilience built in everyday life (Building Resilience in Teacher Education, 2014). This is to show a level of compassion and to be a passionate educator. When I have finished my teaching degree and become a classroom educator, I want my students to feel comfortable, safe, and valued. My students will be treated with respect, decency, and will be taught to reciprocate. I believe it is important for students to communicate with peers and educators as communication is vital for trusting relationships to be built. I will allow my students to socially interact with peers and educators in the classroom as this opens many avenues for communication and creates critical friendships that can allow reflection to occur (Bognar & Krumes 2017, p.87). Communication is an important way to learn about my students and ensuring that they are listened to is just as vital for creating a sense of security in the classroom. I will create a non-judgmental environment for my students and allow them to ask and share their own opinions when needed. The students in my classroom will learn that I am a good listener and am willing to assist them when required. My students will be given guidance to become the best people they can be. I want to become an educator that is a role model to the students I teach and want to be able to prepare the students mentally and physically into becoming citizens that are respectful and resilient.

Ethical practice needs to be taken into consideration in the classroom, and I believe I can teach this through respect, integrity, dignity, and empathy when my students receive the same from me. When ethical practice is established, strong relationships can be built. Educators hold a legal responsibility and must ensure they are accountable and responsible for teaching students the Australian Curriculum and the learning environment must achieve academic success (Churchill, 2018). The framework created for educators in Victoria, The Melbourne declaration on educational goals for young Australians is a vital tool that can be used for educators to understand the importance of ethical practice (Ministerial council on education, employment, training and youth affairs, 2008). Educators must understand the consequences of negligence and it is vital to make sure students are treated with care and respect and that physical violence will not be tolerated. School accountability is an important factor for educators to consider and is essential as it ensures that educators teach the required curriculum. Accountability laws ensure that students receive the best possible education that is available and improves the way students learn. Having the right resources allows for educators to teach the students using the correct equipment. A duty of care is a fundamental law that provides safety for every child, every day whilst in the school environment. Educators are legally responsible for ensuring that students are taken care of while in the school environment and students’ safety and well-being are paramount in educators teaching philosophy, this is to make sure students are not injured whilst at school.

Following the law and ethical requirements during school days, educators can provide a safe and academically impacted environment at school.
