REFLECTION: Poster

This poster on ‘my approach to writing with students’ is part of an assignment I completed in the unit ‘Language and Literacy for Teachers’. I have selected this artefact as writing is a fundamental component of literacy and the poster outlines a range of strategies for guiding and developing students’ writing skills. For example, teachers must first develop students’ transcription skills and phonological awareness before teaching them to write independently; this can be achieved through songs, games and hands-on activities. Developing students’ skills in sequence is an example of standard 2.2 content selection and organisation. In my volunteer work I have noticed that some of the students have very disjointed, messy writing. The students have acceptable verbal communication and spelling, so I think they could benefit from additional and separate transcription practice. I plan to build on my knowledge of literacy strategies through professional training, such as the workshop “talk your way into writing”, held by The Association of Independent Schools Western Australia [AISWA] (AISWA, n.d.a).
