Description

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of strategies for differentiating teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities.

This page provides evidence for meeting Standard 1 (specifically sub-standard 1.5) at a graduate level.

I plan to provide evidence for Australian Professional Standards for Teachers [AITSL] focus area 1.5 through my enrolment in EDC 245 Learning Theories, Diversity and Differentiation [LDD]. I am in the process of applying for this subject and will begin in August 2020. This is a level 2 subject from the Bachelor of Education degree (Primary) and requires the completion of EDC-251 Inclusive Education and EDC-135 Child Development for Educators which I have previously completed (Open Universities Australia, 2020).

Providing an inclusive and equal learning environment for all Australians is one goal of the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians (MCEETYA, 2008). The descriptor for focus area 1.5 details the need for the graduate level teacher to be able to adapt their teaching to provide for learners of all abilities. It further requires strategies for differentiation to be evidenced (AITSL, 2011). Aligning with this focus area descriptor is the LDD subject which explores learning theories and teaching differentiation instruction and assessment (Open Universities Australia, 2020). I have found that the research I have completed for finding evidence for this focus area has led to the realisation there is a great deal to learn on this topic. Upon completion of this unit I will be able to markedly improve the evidence for this focus area.

Looking further ahead towards my first placement I can also see additional ways to improve on this focus area evidence. The AITSL documentary evidence examples document (AITSL, 2013) suggests utilising work samples as one suitable form of evidence. I believe it would be reasonable to request from my mentor an example of this and annotate it to show my understanding of the teaching strategies that have been used to assist this student.
