Critical Reflection

A Digital Professional Portfolio (DPP) is used to collect and reflect on evidence of meeting the Australian nationals standards of teaching (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, [AITSL], 2017). The artefacts that I have collected to date include lesson plans, professional development certificates and exerts from assessments. These artefacts include coverage across Standards and sub-standards 1, 1.2, 2, 3.7, 4.1, 4.4, 6.2, and 7.2. Having a DPP is vital in this day and age, and will be beneficial when I complete my degree.

Given that the DPP is relatively new to me, the artefacts that I have chosen to provide need further depth. But, this depth will come with knowledge and experience. As I get further into the course, my range of artefacts will increase as will my knowledge and what to include. I need to remember that every DPP is different and unique to each individual (Whitton et al., 2016, p. 66).

After my practicum placement, I feel that I received excellent feedback from my mentor concerning standards 1, 2, 3, and 4. We discussed, next placement, we will address some areas that we could not initially. These will include sub-standard 1.5 - working with students on ILP’s, sub-standard 2.4 - working with students to teach (and learn) about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and continuous improvement in standards 3 and 4.

From now on, I would like to focus on being a reflective professional, and that includes taking note of what I can include in my DPP. I need to provide rich experiences and share these reflections to get the best possible outcome for myself and to continually benefit (Lyons et al., 2014, p. 112-115). I aim to rely on my mentor for direction in this area.

Overall I feel confident with my DPP and where I am in my growth and development as a pre-service teacher. I look forward to the many experiences I will be exposed to and the knowledge ahead of me.
