Clearances
In order to be able to teach in the state of Queensland, there are 2 main clearances that are needed. The blue card and registration with Queensland College of Teachers [QCT]. The blue card aims to minimise risk of harm to children by creating safe spaces (Queensland Government, 2017). Creating safe and supportive environments for children do not just happen, rather they take planning and ongoing action. The Blue card’s system is a risk management plan (Queensland Government, 2017). Its initial screening, including a police check, is to ensure that applicants are eligible to work with children and young people based on their past; once approved, applicants will then be continuously monitored to ensure their eligibility remains active for present and future work.
In order to be able to teach in Queensland, applicants need to be registered with QCT. Registration with these entities will require successful completion of, or close to, of a teaching degree. This degree will entail meeting all the Teacher Standards through Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership ([AITSL], 2017). In order to pass the degree, one will need to have successfully passed the Literature and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education [LANTITE]. The LANTITE test is conducted to ensure that future teachers are able to meet teaching demands (ACER, 2019).
