AITSL Professional Teaching Standard 5.1

According to AITSL Professional Teaching Standard 5.1 it is essential that teachers understand how assessment are used to evaluate student learning. Understanding the different perspectives and theories that support or disagree with an assessment task, can assist as a teacher in ensuring that they outline assessments suitable for their students (Gobby & Walker, 2017). For teachers to gather required information from and for their student they need a diverse accumulation of a range of assessments. There are benefits of understanding the different theories and how they influence student learning and an effective teacher can take elements from different theoretical perspectives to create a progressive and meaningful classroom and learning experience through assessments (Brady & Kennedy, 2012). Teacher can determine which assignments need to be used prior to students learning, during student learning and after student learning. They can include effective assessments from various theoretical perspectives for the different levels of learning. Teachers need to know when and why to implement formative learning assessments, as it assists them in determining the progression of their students, changing the direction when they need to thus teachers meet the needs of their students (Brady & Kennedy, 2012). It is essential that teachers are aware of the positive and negative influences of both summative and formative assessments and how these assessment forms are influenced by the theoretical perspective and their teaching format, by doing so they can adapt and create effective and rich assessments that illustrate student developments and indicate the skills the students have developed whether individually or as a collective (Brady & Kennedy, 2012).
