Crime scene investigation

While on my final pre-service placement at Findon High School, I co-designed and taught the intermediate (year 9-10) forensic science class. Students at Findon High School are able to choose from a wide variety of subjects that allow them to pursue their interests while meeting Australian Curriculum requirements. Forensic science is one such subject, in which students use principles of chemistry, physics, biology and environmental sciences to investigate a crime scene.

My mentor and I were able to create an immersive learning experience. Students learned and practiced a variety of skills in class, including crime scene sketching and lifting fingerprints, before applying these to the crime scene throughout the semester. Students also completed laboratory practicals, such as ink and powder analyses, on samples collected from the crime scene. Critical and creative thinking skills were inherent in the subject as students pieced together the evidence they collected to solve the crime.
